Optimal Oral Care While Wearing Braces

Wearing braces means that you'll have to be extra vigilant when performing your oral care routine. Food particles and plaque can get stuck behind your wires and brackets, which means that you may be at risk for cavities and gum disease. Also, your teeth can develop white spots if they are not kept clean during your orthodontic treatment, so in addition to brushing and flossing a couple of times a day and as needed, you should also see your regular dentist on a regular basis for cleanings and checkups. In the meantime, here are some oral care interventions to consider while you're wearing braces.

Healthy Diet

Your orthodontist probably told you to avoid sugary and starchy foods because they can adhere to your teeth and cause cavities. Acidic drinks such as coffee, tea, and sports drinks can also wreak havoc on your teeth because they can cause enamel erosion. If you are unable to cut down on these beverages, make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day to help wash away acid so that it doesn't stay on your teeth for extended periods of time.

While many people prefer drinking bottled water, tap water may be a better choice because it contains fluoride, which will help prevent dental decay. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables will also help keep your gums healthy while you're wearing braces because they are high in vitamin C, which is thought to play a role in the prevention of gingivitis.

Dental And Braces Care

Before brushing and flossing your teeth, be sure to remove the rubber bands from your wires. Also, when brushing your teeth, don't forget to brush along your gum line so that you remove as much plaque and tartar as you can, and always use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Don't neglect your braces either. With gentle pressure, brush your brackets and wires, and try to brush under your wires so that any food particles or plaque that are stuck underneath them will be removed. After you have finished your oral hygiene routine, don't forget to put your rubber bands back on. If you lose them, call your orthodontist right away for replacements.

If you have any questions about oral care, contact a dentist at an office like Wallington Dental. Never neglect brushing or flossing your teeth, even after getting your braces tightened. Some people experience mild discomfort for a couple of days after their tightening appointments, but it is important not to neglect your oral care even for a day because doing so may raise your risk for gum disease and dental decay.
